Hanley Town Hall was illuminated for a festive Christmas carol concert, attracting members of the public, local councillors, and MP Gareth Snell. The event aimed to raise funds for Egret Homes CIC, a non-profit organisation providing housing and support for young people working towards independent living.
A Community Celebration with Music and Lights
The event marked the first public celebration at the former town hall since its relaunch. Although the building is not yet fully open to visitors, the concert brought local residents together in a joyful, festive atmosphere.
Participants enjoyed traditional carols such as:
-
Silent Night
-
See Him Lying on a Bed of Straw
-
O Come All Ye Faithful
The songs were accompanied by a live brass band, while the front of the building was illuminated with vibrant blue and green lights, creating a visually striking backdrop.
Millie Davis, one of the attendees, shared:
“It’s wonderful that Stoke-on-Trent has created an event like this. It feels very positive for the community.”
Honouring Memories and Local Heritage
For many, Hanley Town Hall holds fond personal memories. Carolyn Davis recalled:
“I got married here 25 years ago. The building looked beautiful when lit up—it brings back special memories.”
The town hall originally opened as the Queen’s Hotel in 1869 and later served as a popular wedding venue until its closure in 2020.
Supporting Local Charity: Egret Homes CIC
In addition to the festive celebration, the event helped raise funds for Egret Homes CIC, which supports young people in finding safe accommodation and building independent lives.
Attendees participated in a raffle, and donations contributed to the charity’s ongoing community work.
Future Plans for Hanley Town Hall
Organiser Simon Edwards, representing Heronceau Properties, explained that the event was an opportunity to engage with the community. He said:
“We want to hear people’s hopes for the building’s future. It’s important that the plans reflect the community’s needs.”
Proposed plans for the town hall include:
-
Hotel accommodation
-
Wedding and event spaces
-
Tea rooms and community facilities
Edwards added:
“Our goal is to bring life back to a building that has stood empty for many years, while respecting its history and significance.”
A Joyful Community Moment
The free-of-charge Christmas carol event highlighted the spirit of togetherness and giving. It was one of the final events in Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary celebrations, creating a memorable festive experience for residents and visitors alike.
