Former U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a key lunch meeting with Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir at the White House today, marking a major diplomatic moment amid recent India-Pakistan border tensions.
White House Lunch Set for 1 PM Washington Time
According to a report by Bloomberg, the meeting will take place at 1 p.m. (local time) in the Cabinet Room of the White House. This will be General Munir’s first official visit to the United States since taking over as Pakistan’s military leader.
High-Level Talks with U.S. Secretaries Also Planned
During his U.S. trip, General Munir is also expected to meet with:
- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
These meetings signal an effort to strengthen U.S.-Pakistan military and diplomatic ties at a critical time for South Asia’s security landscape.
Background: India-Pakistan Ceasefire Follows Deadly Kashmir Attack
The meeting comes just weeks after a violent terrorist attack in Kashmir on April 22, which left 26 civilians dead, including tourists. India blamed Pakistan for backing the attackers, calling it state-sponsored terrorism, a claim Islamabad firmly denied.
The border conflict escalated but ended in a ceasefire agreement between the two nuclear-armed neighbors earlier this month.
Trump Claims Trade Helped Secure Ceasefire
Donald Trump, speaking on the development, said he used trade policy as leverage to help broker peace between India and Pakistan. While Pakistan welcomed Trump’s role, India has strongly denied any foreign involvement in the ceasefire process.
