Incident Shakes Passenger’s Confidence in Airline Safety

A passenger assaulted by an Air India Express pilot at Delhi Airport has said the attack has “shaken his trust” in airline safety protocols. The incident reportedly took place on December 19, 2025, near Terminal 1 security checkpoint.

The victim, Ankit Dewan, alleged that Captain Virender Sejwal, who was off duty and traveling as a passenger, physically assaulted him. The altercation began when Dewan objected to airline staff allegedly jumping the queue. Dewan claimed that the pilot abused and attacked him, leaving him injured and bloodied.

Passenger Shares Impact on Family

Speaking to NDTV, Dewan described the emotional toll the incident has taken on his family. He was traveling with his wife, a seven-year-old daughter, and a four-month-old infant.

“My daughter has been the most affected. I told her the pilot was arrested, which calmed her fears temporarily,” Dewan said. He added that his daughter experienced anxiety and fear, crying at minor triggers, while his wife supported him throughout the ordeal.

Dewan also shared his personal injuries, including a broken left nasal bone and ongoing headaches. Doctors have advised that full recovery will take around three to four weeks.

Questions for Air India Express and Authorities

Dewan revealed that he has not been contacted by Air India Express, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), or Delhi Airport authorities following the pilot’s bail.

He posed several questions to the authorities:

  • What action is Air India Express taking to address the incident?

  • When will the investigation be concluded?

  • What steps has the DGCA taken to ensure passenger safety, especially for families with small children?

Dewan also requested the release of CCTV footage from the airport, emphasizing the importance of transparency in such cases.

Legal Proceedings and Bail

Captain Virender Sejwal was granted bail, but Dewan stated that he has confidence in the legal system and the Delhi police to ensure justice. He emphasized the need for accountability to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Airports are considered secure, yet I faced a physical assault. This incident raises serious questions about safety measures,” Dewan said.

Concerns About Aviation Safety

The incident has highlighted potential gaps in airport security protocols and passenger safety, especially for families traveling with infants and children. Dewan urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent similar occurrences and ensure that passenger safety is prioritised at all times.
