“Sikkim Governor Urges Scientists to Focus on Crop Value Addition and Large Cardamom Development”

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur has called on agricultural scientists to put greater focus on value addition of crops to boost farmers’ income and strengthen the state’s economy.

Speaking at the ICAR-ATARI (Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute) workshop organized in collaboration with Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal at Namchi, Governor Mathur emphasized the need for advanced farming techniques and modern innovations.

Importance of Drone Technology in Agriculture

Highlighting the role of technology in farming, the Governor said that drone technology can transform agriculture in Sikkim by improving efficiency, reducing costs, and helping farmers monitor crops more effectively.

Need for More Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)

Governor Mathur also suggested setting up more Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in Sikkim to provide farmers with hands-on training, research support, and practical solutions to improve productivity.

Focus on Large Cardamom – Sikkim’s Key Crop

He stressed that scientists should especially work on value addition of large cardamom, one of Sikkim’s most important crops, to increase its market value and create new opportunities for farmers.
