Police in Raigarh district have seized a truck carrying 80 sacks of paddy, valued at approximately ₹99,000, after it was found abandoned near a pond. The incident has raised concerns over illegal transportation of grain amid the ongoing procurement season, and a probe has been launched to trace the vehicle owner and the source of the paddy.

Paddy Found Abandoned on Kotara Road

The seizure occurred on January 12 in the Kotara Road police station area. Acting on a tip-off, officers inspected the Kulba–Sarwani route and discovered a white Mazda truck parked under suspicious circumstances. The vehicle was empty of occupants when police arrived.

Upon inspection, authorities found 80 sacks of paddy, each weighing roughly 40 kilograms, totaling about 3.2 tonnes. Based on current procurement rates, the consignment’s value is estimated at ₹99,000.

Investigation Underway

Police immediately began inquiries in the surrounding area to trace the driver and identify the vehicle owner. Local residents reported having no knowledge of who parked the truck or where it came from. With no claimant coming forward, the authorities seized the vehicle and the paddy and transported both to the police station for further investigation.

Officials suspect that the grain may have been illegally transported, potentially to bypass procurement norms or evade official checks. Investigators believe the driver abandoned the truck either due to fear of inspection or to avoid scrutiny.

Legal Action and Evidence Collection

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Police are actively examining:

  • Vehicle registration and ownership records

  • Procurement centre documents

  • CCTV footage from nearby roads and toll points

The paddy will be verified to determine whether it was procured legally or obtained through unauthorized channels.

Addressing Procurement Irregularities

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding paddy movement during the procurement season in Raigarh and surrounding areas. Authorities have reiterated that strict monitoring is in place to prevent illegal transport and ensure transparent procurement processes.

Police confirmed that further action will be taken once the investigation identifies those responsible for the abandoned consignment.
