Fifteen people were killed<\/strong> and 42 others injured<\/strong> when Sajid Akram<\/strong>, 50, and his son Naveed Akram<\/strong>, 24, opened fire with rifles during a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, Sydney<\/strong>, on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Sajid Akram was killed in a police shootout<\/strong>, while Naveed Akram is currently hospitalized under police guard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Philippines Confirms Visit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Philippines Bureau of Immigration<\/strong> confirmed that Sajid Akram, an Indian national<\/strong> and Australian resident, visited the country in November 2025. Both father and son reportedly arrived in Davao<\/strong> on November 1 and left the Philippines on November 28, traveling via Manila to Sydney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson stated, \u201cBoth reported Davao as their final destination during their visit. Their departure was recorded from Davao to Manila before returning to Sydney.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australian Authorities on Attackers\u2019 Background<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Australian officials confirmed that Sajid Akram moved to Australia in 1998 on a student visa<\/strong> and later obtained a partner visa in 2001<\/strong>. He held multiple resident return visas<\/strong>, allowing him to travel freely while maintaining permanent resident status.<\/p>\n

Naveed Akram, his son, is an Australian-born citizen<\/strong>. Reports indicate his background is Indian and Italian<\/strong>, with his father being Indian and mother Italian.<\/p>\n

Investigation and Motivations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese<\/strong> stated that the attackers were motivated by Islamic State ideology<\/strong>. Officials are investigating their travel to the Philippines last month and its potential link to radicalization.<\/p>\n

Davao<\/strong>, the Philippines city they visited, has been a focus of Islamic State activity<\/strong>, including the 2017 siege of Marawi by IS militants.<\/p>\n
